Local Area Students Raise Money for Cancer Research

Clink, clank, clunk!  That’s the sound more than 300,000 students throughout North Florida will soon hear as they pour their pocket change into collection jars to support Olive Garden’s 17th-annual Pasta for Pennies program benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School & Youth campaign.  Last year, Olive Garden’s Pasta for Pennies collected $6.1 million nationally, bringing the total amount donated since the program’s inception to more than $53 million.

UNF Awards Full Scholarships to Youths Featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

The University of North Florida has awarded full, four-year scholarships covering tuition, fees, room and board to three Northeast Florida young women who will be featured on an upcoming episode of the ABC television program “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

Orange Park High School to Hold Volunteer Appreciation Event

On Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 7PM, Orange Park High School will be having their first ever Volunteer Appreciation Event. The starts at 7pm in the cafeteria. Almost 30 of their students earned over 100 hours of Volunteer Service. They will be receiving a letter from President Obama, The President’s Volunteer Service Award and a Presidential Pin.

High School Students: Time to Enter Manatee Art Contest

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites high school art students across the state to participate in a contest to create a piece of manatee artwork that will be used on the 2011-2012 manatee decal.

Students in grades 9-12 in Florida should coordinate with their school’s art teacher to submit the artwork, because each school may submit no more than five entries. Home-schooled students also are eligible to enter the contest. Contest details and forms are available online at MyFWC.com/Manatee.

$5,000 in Scholarship Money Available from Chamber Foundation

Scholarship applications will be accepted online for the Clay County Chamber Foundation Scholarship Program. This year, the Chamber Foundation will award three $1,000 scholarships and four $500 scholarships to high school seniors to encourage the pursuit of continuing and vocational education that will develop and enhance skills and knowledge in their chosen fields. All high school seniors in Clay County are encouraged to apply, regardless of academic merit or financial need status. In addition, the Clay County Bar Association will award two $1,000 scholarships to a high school senior to encourage the pursuit of continuing education in the field of business or law.

Florida Youth Program to Graduate 158 Teens Saturday

Florida’s Youth ChalleNGe Academy is run by the Florida Department of Military Affairs and the Florida National Guard. Designed on a military model, 16- to 19-year-old high school dropouts encounter a rigorous five-and-a-half month residential phase.  These teens are given a second chance to earn a high school diploma, but this is the first class in which the Academy has partnered with St. Johns River Community College to offer college credits to the students.
