Barr, Samuels Shine at High School Track Meet

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- Orange Park High School's Karl Barr and Pedro Menendez High School's Gabby Samuels were two of the standout performers at the St. Johns River Athletic Conference track meet on Wednesday at Nease High School.

Barr won the boys' long jump with distance of 23 feet, 6 inches.  A few weeks ago, he won this event at the Bob Hayes Invitation with a personal best of 24 feet, 8 inches.  Prior to that meet, he had only been practicing the long jump for about a week.

Samuels won the girls' shot put with a distance of over 38 feet.  Her personal best is over 41 feet.  Now a senior, she has qualified for the state meet in each year of her high school career.  As a sophomore, Gabby came within a half inch of winning a state championship.  It should be noted that she is an excellent student as well.  Her weighted grade point average is 4.46.
