Family Fights Against Time to Get Their Son Medical Help

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- A First Coast family is struggling financially to give their son the medical attention he needs.  After two brain surgeries, Brayden Wendorff is having unexplained strokes.

The 6-year-old was diagnosed with Chiari malformation in 2010.  It is a condition that restricts fluid from flowing from his spine to his brain.  Two brain surgeries have eased that problem, but have added a new risk.

"If he falls and hits the back of his head, because his derma is cut in half and there's a graph there, it could bust and he'd be gone," said his mother Amanda Wendorff.

She's now focused on her son's latest health concern.  He recently had a stroke and doctors tell her he has another blood clot forming, which could cause another stroke.

135 Arrested in Prescription Drug Trafficking Investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Forty-two people from the First Coast are among the 135 arrested in a multi-agency operation to eliminate drug trafficking.

For 14 weeks, agents throughout north Florida investigated prescription drug trafficking as part of Operation Growing Pains.

Phase one of the operation resulted in the 135 arrests and the dismantling of large-scale organizations.

The initial intent was to identify, disrupt and dismantle any such criminal enterprises.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), another phase is in the works to continue fighting the prescription drug problem.

"Clearly the increase in illegal use of pharmaceutical drugs is attacking many Florida communities," said FDLE Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Dominick Pape.  "Only by a coordinated team approach like this can law enforcement continue to combat this ever increasing threat."

Man Uses Front-end Loader to Steal ATM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man tried to steal an ATM with a front-end loader but didn't get far.

Police stopped the man driving the heavy construction equipment on a hiking and biking trail on the Westside.  The stolen ATM sat in the scoop.

Authorities said the theft happened at a Food Lion store located in the 8200 block of West Beaver and ended several miles away with an arrest. The suspect left a trail of debris in the parking lot.

Police caught up with him just off Imeson Road near Commonwealth.  The payload of cash was recovered in the bucket of the loader.

Tuesday morning at daybreak crews started cleaning up the mess and scraping the damaged ATM.

VyStar Credit Union says its plans include replacing the damage cash machine with a new one.

Sean Pilgrim who surveyed the crime scene was shocked someone would use a loader to haul off with an ATM.
