ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The Clay County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide where an adult male and an adult female were found deceased inside an apartment.
CCSO deputies responded to The Cottages of Oakleaf at 3750 Silver Bluff Boulevard around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to a release from CCSO spokesperson Mary Justino.
A roommate found Zachary Robert Johns, 23, and Kayla Marie Beynon, 23, deceased inside their apartment.
Detectives believe the murder-suicide was committed by Johns, who they say shot Beynon and then turned the gun on himself. The couple had an altercation, which detectives say led to the shooting.
No one else was in the apartment when the shooting happened. The couple, who were not married, had a 6-month-old child in common, Justino said. Beynon also had another child, a two-year-old boy. The children were with grandparents when the incident happened. Justino said the children are with Beynon's mother.
Justino said Beynon called deputies a month ago. Beynon's call was a request to have a deputy come to the couple's condo while she removed personal items.
Family members told police after that incident, Beynon continued to live at the condo with Johns, Justino said.
