1 dead, 1 injured in shooting at nursing home | News
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A Clay County grandfather is dead and his wife fighting for her life, after a shooting inside an Orange Park nursing home this afternoon in what police say was an attempted murder-suicide.
It happened around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon inside the Life Care Center at 2145 Kingsley Avenue in Orange Park.
Lt. Jim Morgan with the Clay County Sheriff's Office said James Stanton, 75, was visiting his wife, Patricia Stanton, 68 who was a patient there.
Morgan said Mr. Stanton shot his wife in her room and then shot himself. He was dead when police arrived.
His wife was taken the nearby hospital where she was listed in critical condition Wednesday night.
Investigators say no one else was injured or threatened and called it an isolated, domestic incident.
Wednesday evening, detectives visited the Stanton's home which is a few miles from the nursing home.
The couple's neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said Pat and Jim didn't have any marital problems he was of aware of, and he said she had just recently moved to the nursing after falling off her porch.
"He's been my neighbor for a couple years. I've known him for 15 years. I can't understand why this happened."
Fighting back tears, he said he just saw Mr. Stanton Tuesday night and everything seemed normal. Friends say Stanton was a small engine mechanic who worked out of a shop next to his home.
"I'm going to miss Mr. Jim. He was a good guy. I can't understand it," said the neighbor.
