Family Mourns 13-Year-Old Killed in Hit-and-Run

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The family of a 13-year-old is pleading for the person responsible for a fatal collision to come forward.

"I hope the person will come forward so I can have some closure," said Jack Alvezios, the teen's dad.

Brien Andrew Alvezios, 13, of Orange Park, was riding his bike when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Saturday night.

The teen's family said they had no idea he had left the house.  Kati Alvezios, Brien's sister, said she found out later her brother was on his way to find her.

"I was going to meet some friends down the road, and I took the cell phone and he needed it. I didn't know he was riding down the road to get it," said Kati.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Wilkinson Junior High School student was heading north on Branan Field Road, just south of Trail Ridge Road in Clay County, around 9:40 p.m. when a vehicle struck and killed him.

Lt. Bill Leeper with the Florida Highway Patrol said late Monday afternoon investigator believe the vehicle involved is a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 2005 - 2010 model.

Leeper said the vehicle sustained damage to the right front headlight and may possibly have hood damage too.

Kati Alvezios, 18, said today she and friends spent Sunday in the neighborhood asking for help paying for Brien's funeral. They also checked cars, looking for damage.

Brien's father, Jack Alvezios, said today that he is not angry, but in shock, calling the person who hit his son "heartless."

He begged the driver to come forward so the family could have closure.

In the meantime, a small white cross marks the scene of the incident. The family has also taken down its Christmas tree. The holiday was all about Brien, his father said, since he was the youngest, but there will be no Christmas this year.

The FHP is asking that anyone with information on the driver contact FHP's traffic homicide investigations unit.
