Family: Teen was 'on a new path,' despite past
News

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A 15-year-old Clay County teenager is still on life support after a police involved shooting on Saturday.

Family members said they know the teen had a checkered past, but believe he was turning his life around.

The grandmother of 15-year-old Hadrian Miguel Rabadan said he was 'On a new path', before Saturday night's shooting.

The teenager was wounded by gunfire, but police are still trying to determine if he shot himself or was shot by seven-year veteran Clay County Deputy Jason Graff after officers responded to an alleged armed suicide threat.

"The boy was looking forward to try and get his record clean. He wanted to become an FBI agent," said Patricia Laughter, the teen's grandmother.

Rabadan's has three felony charges on his criminal record dating back to 2011. Two of the charges include grand theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school property.

Also in 2011, he was charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly threatened Laughter with a baseball bat.

"Everyone in life has family issues, I'm not the first and I'm not going to be the last, and every family deals with those issues the best way they can," said Laughter.

Despite the record on paper, his family and neighbors say he was a changed teen and was a 'good kid.'

"He worked passed that. He was a quiet kid, didn't bother anybody," said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous.

The question lingering in the neighborhood is why some residents say they only heard one gun shot when police shots were exchanged after Rabadan fired first.

Some say they don't know if Rabadan really hurt himself.

"I don't know. I heard one shot, everybody in this community heard one shot," added Laughter.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave as part of procedure.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation and is collecting all evidence, witness statements and conducting ballistic testing. FDLF said it cannot make any comments regarding the active investigation.
