Natural Gas Leak Shuts Down US 17 and Businesses

 

Orange Park firefighters responded to a natural gas leak today that shut down several business and US 17 for about 30 minutes while crews repaired the line.

According to a press release from the Orange Park Fire Department, a misplaced landscape spike was all it took to shut down US 17 and several businesses this afternoon during the lunchtime rush hour.

Teco Gas crews were called to the scene in the 1800 Block of US 17 due to the smell of gas. The crew discovered a 3-inch line had been penetrated by a landscape spike causing the leak.

Crews from the Orange Park Fire Department and Clay County Hazmat Team secured the leak and the Teco Gas crew repaired the line.

All businesses and US17 were reopened once the leak was stopped. No injuries occurred to the public or firefighters.

Veterans-Only Job Fair Happening Today

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Veterans across the country will be able to log on and apply for post-service careers as part of a virtual job fair today.

Just one day before the celebration of Veteran's Day, more than 36,000 former servicemen and women have signed up to participate in the online job fair.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, recent war veterans had a slightly higher unemployment rate than the rest of the country in 2010. 

"Gulf War-era II veterans," or members of the military who have served since 2001, had a jobless rate of 11.5 percent last year.  Non-veterans had a jobless rate of 9.4 percent. 

In July 2010, a quarter of Gulf War-era II veterans reported some sort of disability from their time in the armed forces.

To help these men and women find new careers, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Milicruit.com are holding a virtual job fair from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today.

Starting a new career could be as easy as logging on and uploading your resume. 

First Coast Workforce Development is holding a "virtual job fair" this week. 

It began at midnight Monday and runs through midnight Friday. The job fair features more than 50 employers and over 300 job opportunities on their website.

Once you go to the site, create a user name and password.  Then you can upload your resume and start applying.

Virtual job fairs have become more popular for both companies and their potential employees.

Kohl’s Department Stores announced today it anticipates hiring more than 40,000 associates nationwide this holiday season, up approximately five percent from last year due to store growth in 2011.
