Orange Park woman loses everything in fire except $800 cable bill

Janey Ortega lived in her Orange Park home for just a few months before a fire destroyed everything on New Year's Eve.

Ortega said everything was charred, including a cable box and router she was renting from AT&T. She says she called the cable company, and was told not to worry about returning or paying for the equipment.

"They said we wouldn't have to pay and sorry for what happened," she said.

But the bills kept coming. Eventually, she started getting calls and letters from a collection agency, demanding she pay $802.50 for the equipment.

1 stabbed in Orange Park after argument in apartment


ORANGE PARK, Fla. — A stabbing in an Orange Park apartment complex Thursday evening sent one man to the hospital and another into custody, according to a watch commander with the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Charges have yet to be filed against the suspect, and he is expected to be released from custody shortly, officials said.

The victim was taken to UF Health in Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries and will be released soon as well, according to authorities.

The incident occurred after a boyfriend came home to the apartment and found his girlfriend there with another man. An argument broke out between the men, according to CCSO, and at some point, the boyfriend stabbed the other man.

The State Attorney's Office will review the case and decide if any charges need to be filed, officials said.


One hospitalized after 'serious' crash in Orange Park

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- At least one person was flown to the emergency room Wednesday afternoon following a "serious" two-vehicle crash in Orange Park near the Doctors Lake Bridge, authorities said.

Authorities set up a roadblock in the northbound lanes of U.S. 17 near Holly Point Road East after the crash was reported about 4:10 p.m., a spokesperson for Clay County Fire Rescue told First Coast News. One victim was flown to UF Health via helicopter, Capt. Bernita Bush said.

No charges filed in Orange Park shooting, standoff


ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A SWAT standoff with a shooting suspect in an Orange Park neighborhood came to a peaceful end Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, one suspect has been taken into custody after barricading himself inside a home on Debbie Lane following a domestic dispute that ended in gunfire just before 11 a.m.

The victim, identified as 29-year-old Jonathan Nelson, was taken to Orange Park Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, agency spokesperson Mary Justino said. He remains hospitalized in very serious condition.

Threatening note sparks search of Oakleaf HS


ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Authorities are trying to find out who left a threatening note found at Oakleaf High School in Orange Park Thursday morning that triggered a scare and subsequent search of the premises.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the anonymous threat was found at some point and school officials along with deputies stepped in to clear the school of any potential threat. "The school is being searched and the school day schedule will proceed as normal and without further interruption," CCSO spokesperson Mary Justino said.

"We will not divulge at this time the specific information contained in the threat/note," she added.

Orange Park man chased by Argentine tegu lizard


ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Bradley Arington, 24, has seen a lot of things in his lifetime but this was a first and one he will never forget.

"I was scared, man," he said.

Arington was taking his trash to the curb for pickup when he came face to face with an Argentine tegu.

What's a tegu? A very big lizard.

"I heard this very loud hissing sound and I boogied back inside," said Arington, "and it kept coming at me so I ran."

While it was hiding in his garage, Arington called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation commission. FWC contacted Rod Smith of House of Reptiles who captured the lizard.

Train crushes McLaren stuck on Orange Park tracks


ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- No one was hurt after a train hit a semi truck hauling some expensive cargo stranded on the tracks in Orange Park Friday morning, authorities said.

According to a spokesperson for the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the semi's driver, Ryan Fung, called the Sheriff's Office about 7:50 a.m. and told dispatchers he had gotten stuck on the tracks near Doctors Lake Drive and Greenridge Road and was about to get hit by the train.

The train, which was moving slowly, struck the semi and pushed it down the tracks, but never derailed, Sheriff's spokesperson Mary Justino told First Coast News. The train wound up going straight through the truck, separating the cab and trailer.
